Privacy

Dinozoa has no accounts, no sign-up and no login. It does not set cookies, and it does not sell, share or trade anything about you. This page explains the small amount of data that does exist and why.

What stays on your device

Your game progress and statistics are stored in your own browser using localStorage. That includes:

• games played, games won, current and best streak, fewest guesses;
• today's guesses and hints, so refreshing mid-game does not lose your place;
• your Endless mode best run;
• whether you have already seen the tutorial.

This never leaves your device. It is not sent to me or to anyone else, because there is no server to send it to — Dinozoa is a static website with no backend. Clearing your browser data deletes it permanently, and there is no way for me to restore it. You can also erase it yourself with the "Reset stats" button in the account panel.

Visitor statistics

I use GoatCounter to count visits, because otherwise I would have no idea whether anyone plays. It is an open-source, privacy-focused analytics tool that records the page visited, the referring site, your browser and screen size, and the country your request came from.

It sets no cookies, creates no advertising profile, and does not follow you across websites. Your IP address is not stored: it is hashed with a salt that changes every day and then discarded, which lets a visit be counted once without the visitor ever being identifiable. Because no personal data is processed and no information is stored on your device, this does not require a consent banner, which is exactly why you are not seeing one.

Images and descriptions

Animal pictures and descriptions are fetched directly from Wikipedia by your browser while you play. That request goes to the Wikimedia Foundation rather than to me, so your IP address and browser are visible to them in the same way as if you had opened Wikipedia yourself. Their handling of that is covered by the Wikimedia privacy policy. I never see those requests.

Sharing your result

The share button copies a text summary to your clipboard. Nothing is posted anywhere, and I do not see what you copy or where you paste it.

Links to other sites

Dinozoa links out to Wikipedia, to the source code repository, and possibly to a tip page. Following any of those takes you to a site with its own privacy policy, which I do not control.

Children

Dinozoa is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Data protection law gives you rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. In this case there is nothing to exercise them against: I hold no personal data about you, and I have no way to identify you. The only data connected to you is in your own browser, entirely under your control. If you would like to confirm any of this, please get in touch.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Dinozoa is a personal project, so any changes will be small ones.
